Top-of-the-line Chelsea lever action banjo clock with 7.5" dial, Mount Vernon reverse glass window, and eagle finial.
- RESTORATION STORY -
The clock was in overall good condition upon receipt. Problems were an inactive movement, the throat glass had come loose, and the dial was in extremely poor condition. Detailed scope of work follows the gallery.
Clock was received inoperable: the click and spring were stuck open so the clock couldn’t be wound. Removed, dismantled, cleaned and inspected movement, mainspring & barrel.
Clock appears to have had prior work in 1977 (per paper tag in case), including bushing installation. Since then, the oil had dried to a hard varnish thus preventing operation.
Reassembled and oiled movement
Greased mainspring
Repaired broken hands left threaded screw
Replaced missing movement fastener with e-clip
Polished brass face bezel, eagle finial and all brass hinges and screws
Replaced four face fasteners with proper flat head wood screws;
Lightly restored wood finish, preserving patina
Removed incorrect rope caulk securing throat glass and replaced with proper wood glue blocks
Performed sympathetic restoration of dial including removal of major black paint discoloration and touched-up paint per original color match
Bench tested movement for two weeks and regulated time
