"Bim-Bam" Tambour Mantel Clock

- RESTORATION STORY -

This clock had lived and died a full life, and was quite literally salvaged from the trash bin. It arrived in extremely poor condition and had been abused in all its elements: dial, case and movement, requiring extensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration. The photo documentation illustrates the restoration process from arrival through final assembly and regulation. Detailed scope of work follows the gallery.

- SCOPE OF WORK -

Removed, dismantled, cleaned and inspected movement and mainsprings. Clock showed signs of prior unskilled work and is in overall poor condition.
- Observed extreme pivot wear and pivot hole elongation from 100 years of use and incorrect soldered repair.
- Case shellac finish was tobacco imbedded and lifting.
- Dial silvering and numerals were extremely scratched.
- Replacement back door unfinished and missing latch.
Reversed soldered escapement pivot repair; polished wheel arm
Installed 9 pivot bushings
Polished all pivots
Polished and lacquered movement back plate
Reassembled & oiled movement
Greased pallet levers
Stained back door to match case, fashioned closing latch
Renewed shellac case finish with four coats of blonde shellac
Re-silvered dial face; renovated numerals and chapter ring
Polished brass face bezel
Lacquered dial and face bezel
Bench tested movement for two weeks and regulated time
